Beauty

(Scroll down for today’s Toning Tuesday Sound Washing.)

Beauty Persists

The other day I was on a walk with my two dogs and we stopped at their usual open area for sniffing and such. My eyes were drawn to the beauty of this Wisteria vine that was taking over a tree. Amongst the spindly branches were these gorgeous purple flowers.

This reminded me of how beauty shines through no matter what the circumstances. In this case, through these bare branches, the color and delicate nature of the flowers is vibrant. In the case of illness and disease, we can see the beauty of the inner person.

When we are walking the path of an illness like cancer, the treatment is what seems to bring us down the most. The treatments can take away our hair, change our skin, cause us to feel less enthusiasm and energy for life, and yet, it is these with types of reminders that we learn to focus on what is beautiful all around us and within us.

I remember when I heard those words, “It’s cancer”. I was stunned. My first thought was, o.k., we can get through this. And the doctor told me that we would get through this. He connected me to lots of other doctors and they all had the same message. We can do this, we will take care of you. We have a protocol and you will follow that and then we will monitor you forever after that. I felt like I was guided down a path before I even had a chance to get my bearings. I trusted that the path I was on was the right one. And it was. For me at that time.

Now it is 8 years after and I am a completely different person. I am grateful for the medical support I received and I am grateful for the family and friends who followed my journey and supported me all along the way.

I was able to see the good things that were coming to me along this journey. I did lose my hair, and I found a beautiful bald head had it’s advantages in life–shorter showers, no bad hair days. I experienced rashes and burns on my skin from chemo and radiation. I saw opportunities to rest, nurture myself, and to look into my digestion for answers to some of the skin issues and now I see clear skin glowing with the beauty of vibrant health. When my energy was low, I discovered the beauty of resting. Now I find balance between resting and action.

No matter what your circumstances, I invite you to see the beauty around you. Allow the beauty to persist. Allow yourself to take that beauty into your heart and feel it. Follow that feeling and look inside yourself. See the beauty within you. Below is today’s Sound Washing for Toning Tuesday.
